Marmots are large, ground-dwelling rodents that belong to the squirrel family. There are 15 species of marmots, with some of the most well-known being the Alpine marmot in Europe. They typically live in alpine meadows, grasslands, and sometimes forests. Marmots play a critical role in their ecosystems. Their burrowing activity aerates the soil and promotes plant growth, and they serve as prey for a variety of predators. Additionally, their droppings help fertilize the areas around their burrows, supporting the growth of local vegetation.
